It can be inconvenient for citizens to get copies of Department of Energy public documents, but usually you can get them if you work at it.

National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, such as environmental impact statements (EISs) and environmental assessments (EAs), usually are distributed through the DOE Oak Ridge Information Center.  Phone the Center (865-241-4780 or 1-800-382-6938, option 6) and ask that a copy be mailed to you.  You can also contact the Information Center by e-mail or send a fax to the Information Center (865-574-3521).  For fastest results, visit the Information Center at 475 Oak Ridge Turnpike in the east end of Oak Ridge (it's in a brick-facade building west of the Food City store) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on a weekday.  It's best to phone before you go, to make sure they have the document you are looking for.  NEPA documents should be available without charge, but there may be a reproduction charge for some other documents.

DOE Environmental Management documents (such as CERCLA feasibility studies and proposed plans for waste site cleanups) also are made available at this location.

Most documents are made available over the Internet.  Check the DOE Information Center website on the pages called New Documents and NEPA Documents.   Most Site Specific Advisory Board publications are available at http://www.oro.doe.gov/em/ssab/pubs.htm.  Many DOE-Oak Ridge public announcements are posted on the Bechtel Jacobs public involvements website. Some public review drafts of EISs and EAs are made available through the What's New page on the DOE Headquarters NEPA website. Other publicly available EISs and EAs can be found on another page of that website, but public access to many other documents is now restricted as a result of post-9/11 security restrictions.
